A fire alarm system is a network of devices that detect and alert people of a fire, smoke, carbon monoxide, or other fire-related emergency. Fire alarm systems are required in most commercial buildings and are also found in offices and factories.
Fire alarm systems use a variety of devices to detect and alert people, including:
- Detectors: These can sense heat, smoke, carbon monoxide, or other toxic elements. The four most common types of detectors are ionization, photoelectric, combination ionization/photoelectric, and heat.
- Control panel: This is the central hub for all detector signals and provides a status indication to users. It can also be set up to simulate an alarm for drills.
- Sounders: These operate to warn people in the building that there may be a fire and to evacuate.
- Remote signal system: This can alert the fire brigade via a central station.
Fire alarm systems can also include additional warnings, such as sending a voice message or making a phone call.
